The Arizona bark scorpion (Centruroides sculpturatus) is the most venomous scorpion in the United States. Unlike most scorpions whose sting causes mild discomfort, the bark scorpion's venom is medically significant and can cause severe reactions, particularly in children, the elderly, and pets.
Bark scorpions are uniquely adapted to Arizona's Sonoran Desert environment. They are excellent climbers, capable of scaling stucco walls, cinderblock fences, and even glass. They actively hide in the gaps and voids beneath stucco siding, inside block wall columns, under loose bark, and in any shaded, protected area they can find.
What makes them especially difficult to control: they can squeeze through openings as small as 1/16 of an inch -- about the thickness of a credit card. Do blacklights actually find scorpions?
Yes. Scorpions glow under ultraviolet light. A compound in their exoskeleton lights up a bright blue-green when a UV flashlight hits it, even from several feet away. Walking your yard and block walls with a blacklight after dark is a genuinely useful way to confirm scorpions are on your property.
There are real limits, though. A blacklight only shows you the scorpions that are out hunting on the surface. Arizona bark scorpions spend the day tucked into gaps as small as 1/16 of an inch (behind stucco, inside block wall columns, under bark and debris) where no flashlight can reach them. Freshly molted scorpions barely glow at all until their new exoskeleton hardens, so the young ones are easy to miss.
Here's the bigger issue: detection is not control. Killing the ones you spot at night does nothing about the population breeding inside your walls. A blacklight tells you that you have a problem. It can't tell you where scorpions are getting in or where they're hiding inside.

When is scorpion season in Arizona?
Peak scorpion season in Arizona runs March through October. Bark scorpions don't fully stop in winter, though. East Valley winters are just too mild to shut them down.
Spring is when things pick up. Warming nights pull scorpions out of their winter hiding spots to hunt and breed, and sightings around block walls and patios start to climb. Activity peaks through the summer monsoon months. Extreme heat and storm moisture push scorpions to look for shelter, and that's when most homeowners find them inside (garages, bathrooms, laundry rooms).
By late fall, surface activity tapers off. But scorpions don't die off, and they don't truly hibernate. They cluster in protected spots like wall voids, block wall columns, and woodpiles, then come back out on warm winter days. A scorpion you see in January didn't just arrive. It has been sheltering on your property all along.

What should I do if I'm stung by a scorpion?
Wash the sting site with soap and water, apply a cool compress, and call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. The line is free and confidential, and it's staffed around the clock. The specialists there can tell you, based on your symptoms, whether you need medical care.
A sting from an Arizona bark scorpion (Centruroides sculpturatus) usually causes intense pain at the site, along with numbness and tingling. Keep the affected area still. Don't take or give any medication without guidance from Poison Control or a medical professional.
Some symptoms mean you should call 911 or get to an emergency room right away: trouble breathing, muscle twitching or jerking, unusual eye, head, or neck movements, drooling, or vomiting. Take any sting to a young child seriously. Children and the elderly face the highest risk of a severe reaction, and bark scorpion venom is the most potent of any scorpion in the United States.
If a pet is stung, call your veterinarian. Pets can react badly too, especially small dogs and cats.
Can I get rid of scorpions myself?
You can knock down scorpion activity quite a bit on your own. What DIY usually can't do is eliminate an established population. Here's the honest breakdown: the prevention work helps, and it's worth doing. The catch is that bark scorpions live inside places you can't treat yourself.
Start with what works. Install door sweeps and fresh weatherstripping, seal the gaps around pipes and utility penetrations, and screen your stucco weep holes. Clear out woodpiles, loose bark, and yard debris where scorpions shelter. Get crickets and roaches under control too, since those are the prey insects that attract scorpions in the first place. A nighttime blacklight check will tell you whether the problem is growing or shrinking.
